Social media and smartphones are the means of information that today’s students, described as Z generation, use intensively. This study aims to examine the relationship between social media, duration of usage and smartphone addiction dimensions: addiction proneness and addiction at the same time their impact on Z generation. In addition, it is aimed to provide recommendations, based on the addiction caused by overusing social media and smartphone and their impact on Z generation. In this empirical study, the data on perceptions concerning social media usage and smartphone addiction was gathered by means of a questionnaire from 6427 participating students at all high schools in Artvin in Turkey. Data were subjected to content analysis with SPSS 24.0 software and presented in tables. The findings showed that the relationship between duration of social media usage and smartphone addiction dimensions: addiction proneness and addiction. At the other hand it is determined that that the more duration of social media used, the more smartphone addiction (addiction proneness and addiction).
